This week we took to the city to support one of the most creative fashion designers of this generation – Hellavagirl.
When you’re at an event like this and you want to photographically document it for fun, it’s nice to bring something smaller than your usual rather lumpy main body and lens.
We thought this was the perfect time to put the brand new Olympus E-M10 Mark III through it’s paces and show that in 2017, you can take great images with a great entry level camera.
We sat down in amongst it at the Freemason’s Hall in London. The grand decor and the edgy fashion types are the perfect contrasting setting for fantastic photographs.
The show started off with a dark, enchanting dance. Males and females intertwined in an acrobatic array of grotesque beauty, perfectly aligning with the collections name – Human Meat Freaks. We were extremely impressed with how quick the autofocus is on the E-M10 Mark III. Obviously, the quicker your camera focuses, the quicker you can press the shutter. When you’re shooting an event and don’t know whats going to happen next, it really helps to have a camera that’s going to help you to get the shot.
After the initial introduction dance, the crowd were pumped to see the collection. We were greeted with some old school Nirvana whilst we watched it awe as the models started to exhibit the garments.
We used the zoom the get some close up shots, adding an intimate dynamic to the scene.
For the bigger dresses, we shot wide, showing them in all their glory. It was very handy having a tool that was so small, yet so versatile.
We managed to get creative with some compositions, using the whole scene to creating engaging imagery. The casual shooter might think the obvious thing would be to use flash. We wanted to keep the atmosphere of the environment we were in and use the pleasing lighting that was available. The E-M10 Mark III handled the conditions fantastically.
Towards the end of a show, all the models come out together. This is the perfect time to capture a different style of photograph, compositionally.
At a show as incredible as this, every person there wants to see every moment that happens. As a photographer, you feel much less guilty waving a tiny camera like the E-M10 Mark III around rather than the usual larger suspects.
There is a time and a place for all cameras and lenses in existence. Of course, this is also a complete matter of opinion. We want to show you that in 2017, there is definitely a place for a camera like the Olympus E-M10 Mark III to be a companion for any enthusiast or pro to live in harmony with their main body.
